SURFACED
This project began by rethinking the process of making furniture to appreciate solid wood material. Ota assembles several pieces of wood and spreads down to get enough surface area. This way of manufacturing is opposite to the way of industrial manufacturing, in which the surfaces of different parts are first finished and combined to form a structure. In the industrial method, in most cases, the wood can be replaced by plywood. To eliminate the materiality of solid wood, Ota chose an alternative form. For example, the tabletop is a flat surface, but there are more than a hundred small pieces of wood combined. A certain surface makes it clear that each piece has a certain pattern and color. These differences in the grain and the direction of the pieces enrich the work.
